The Best Training Aid For Indoor or Outdoor Practice The Divot Board This is the most useful ball striking development training aid that I own. Putting Equipment Problem - NOT!!! For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective. Today (Monday 5/20/24) I got a text from a gentleman named Scott asking me what type of shaft he should get to correct his "left pull" putting problem. He went into great detail, referencing an article I wrote quite a while ago on Buffalo Golfer. We texted back and forth for a few minutes, then I just gave him a call because my thumbs were getting tired 😁. First of all I asked him where he was located, and he replied Wisconsin. I didn't know I had that far of a reach. He went on to say that he had been a low handicap player but that his "left pulls" in his putting had caused his handicap to rise. As a result, he wanted my recommendation on a mallet putter with either a centered shaft, a heel shafted double bend, or a heel shafted putter with a straight shaft insert. To his chagrin initially, I replied that he wasn't having an equipment issue, he was having a ball striking issue. He was surprised because he never really connected ball striking with anything to do with putting. I explained that a basic ball striking tenet is that 90% of the time (100% with putting), a ball starts in a certain direction because the face of the club is pointing that way, and that no shaft consideration is going to resolve that. Even if it did, that would be making a compensation for a swing fault, and compensations usually put a damper on your potential. I gave him two basic drills that I have my students do at their putting lesson that relate to clubface squareness and swing path. We hung up, to my surprise he did them right away, and called me back thirty minutes later. -Scott is definitely motivated.- The drills were The Channel Drill and The Squareness Awareness Drill He said that in an effort to keep his stroke path going "straight back and straight through", he had developed an outside-in swing path, which was sending the ball left. I mentioned that even when attempting to keep the path "straight back and straight through", there is normally a slight arc to the swing path, and an effort should be made to keep the face square to the path. Even so, I still like my students to maintain a "straight back and straight through" mindset. He also said that he was committing to a mallet putter, which I heartily agreed with (he was using a blade putter), that he was going to mark his ball as recommended in my newsletter article issue 786 Putting Process Discovery, and for what it's worth he's getting the double bend shaft on the putter. The takeaway here is that before you spend your hard earned money on new equipment, make sure that your swing fundamentals are in order. Try it, you'll like it!
