Air Travel and Your Golf Clubs

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

I usually write about golf tips, but this week I digress because of an incident I had personally, and because of an incident that a college golf team experienced recently.

Two weeks ago I took a short trip to visit my brother in Florida, and of course I took my clubs.

On my return trip I was sitting at a window seat waiting to de-board for my connecting flight, when I saw my clubs being transferred to my connecting plane.

I watched as my travel bag was placed on the cart, with the body of the travel bag within the cart, but with the neck of my bag positioned on a side rail like a neck on a guillotine.

Then, to my horror, I watched as three heavy looking suitcases were piled on top of my bag. I took pictures of everything just in case there was some damage to my clubs, and thankfully they arrived unharmed in Buffalo!

To see what real baggage handling abuse looks like, check out the video below of a college team's golf bags being tossed around without any regard for the safety of their contents. It almost looks like the guy is trying to see how high the bags will bounce when he tosses them. Click on the image to watch the video:

Here are a few thoughts on air travel with your clubs.
  1. First of all, take a picture of your clubs in your bag before you secure them in your travel bag. I had something stolen from my bag a few years back and after multiple emails I got reimbursed. My position was that if the airline requires me to not lock my bag, they inherit the responsibility for the safety of the contents.

  2. Use a high quality, heavy duty travel bag. Don't scrimp, look around, there are plenty online.

  3. If your driver, woods, and hybrids have removable heads, remove them and pack them in your suitcase. Use one separate baggie for each head so that you don't lose any of the connecting screws. I normally only remove my driver head, but after my latest experience and after seeing the video above, I'm removing them all in the future.

  4. Put your raincover on your bag - if you have one - and pack the inside with towels before you zip it up. As an extra precaution, you can put socks over your irons and wedge heads.

  5. You can also use a stiff arm support bar like the Bag Boy Backbone to act as a spine in your bag.

  6. Do what I did on my last trip - I checked the condition of my clubs before I left the airport. If anything had been damaged I would have notified someone on the spot to give credibility to any claim I may make. I know you sign a waiver against damage claims when you travel with your clubs, but that waiver doesn't hold weight if the damage resulted from negligent mishandling of your property.
Try it, you'll like it!
