The Divot Board
This is the most useful ball striking development training aid that I own.
Distance and Humidity
For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.
Last week I said "You will find this tip to be very useful if we ever get any hot weather 😁", well this week we got the hot weather!
I played yesterday and it was extremely hot, plus we got a little rain. Here's how humidity can affect your distance.
I received this email from a friend living in Florida after last week's "playing in the heat" newsletter:
Hi Tom. Just read your article about playing in hot weather in Florida, and I’ve got a related question.
Do you find that your club distances are shorter in Florida?
For several years I was playing in February and March in central Florida and found my distances were at least one club shorter than playing in WNY.
Discussing it with others, and they were thinking elevation, thicker air (humidity, although it’s not that humid at that time of the year), different dirt than in WNY ( less dense).
Yet, I find that my ball flies further during the warm weather in WNY.

Here was my reply:
Great hearing from you Ned, hope you are enjoying Florida.
As far as distance goes, I found that my distance increased in Florida, at least this last time around.
I suspect that your shorter distances are a combination of Father Time (he's undefeated) and maybe a little technique.
If you want to put in the energy and the effort, you can pick up some distance through increasing your swing speed.
Rypstick golf has some good equipment and good tutorials.
Other things matter, like squareness of contact, swing path, etc., but swing speed is required.
It's not the humidity, believe it or not.
Do golf balls travel less in humidity?
With low humidity (dry air), nitrogen and oxygen is essentially the only gasses a golf ball travels through. A more humid air mass however, contains more water vapor. Water vapor is made up of oxygen and hydrogen. Because hydrogen is the lightest gas of them all, this will allow a golf ball to travel further.
The ball travels further in humidity, knowledge is power, use it.
