Simplicity - Fluid Motion Factors

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

As a golf coach-instructor, I'm always doing research, and currently a lot of my attention has been geared to how the brain interacts with the body in the golf swing. That's always fascinated me.

Last week I wrote that the most current research goes against shutting down the prefrontal cortex of the brain by trying to avoid any swing key thoughts when you are getting ready to swing the club. In fact, according to the most current research, having a swing key in your brain is encouraged.

During more research, I saw a recommendation for a book titled "Simplicity" by Steven Yellin that had advice on how to release a fluid motion in the golf swing.

So I bought the Kindle version, read it in a day, and I'm currently into my second reading of the book.

First of all, the book was published before the most current research mentioned in last week's newsletter was done.

I mention that because it represents a contrarian point of view on whether or not to enlist the prefrontal cortex of the brain by having a swing key in mind as you swing. Yellin says do not have any swing key in mind because when you enlist the prefrontal cortex of the brain, it activates your core muscles for your swing, and that works against fluidity.

He developed what he calls Fluid Swing Factors that help you swing fluidly when they are used properly.

His most recently developed Fluid Swing Factors involve getting your body and brain into a non-anticipatory and non-judgemental frame of mind, and having an abstract thought in mind as you swing. He says that when you do so, you allow the cerebellum portion of the brain to take over (rather than the prefrontal cortex), which promotes a fluid natural swing.

One point that he states - that he could emphasize further - is that there has to be some swing technique in your "muscle memory bank" that can be drawn from subconsciously for the fluid motion factors to be effective.

Obviously there's a lot more detail in this fascinating book, and in it he recommended going to his website StevenYellin.com and getting more information on the technique. He sells instructional videos on his website, and even though the book was very detailed I almost pulled the trigger. Before I bought them, I went to YouTube and searched for "Fluid Motion Factor Golf" and found a treasure trove of information.

It complimented the book well enough to figure things out myself, so I spent several hours viewing what I found and developed a plan to try out some fluid motion factors for my game.

I still may buy the videos on his site just because I appreciate his work, but for now things seem to be working well.

I've played three rounds since reading the book and viewing the videos, and I can say that it has made a positive difference in my ball striking. I shot under my age in each round (age 77) and have enjoyed at least two birdies per round, with several lip outs. I've hit a lot more greens in regulation as a result of the better ball striking.

I did take the liberty of adjusting some of his recommendations as follows:
  1. In the rehearsal box, I had a few swing keys in mind and rehearsed the motion that I wanted in my swing.
  2. In the hitting box, I had nothing but an abstract thought in my brain before and as I swung the club.
The vast majority of my strikes actually felt very fluid when I was disciplined enough to follow my plan. I did let a swing key slip into my mind unintentionally on a couple of occasions, and those swings definitely did not feel as fluid as the others.

I've said this a zillion times, but in the end golf is a game of discovery. If you are open to discovering something that may help your swing, buy the book Simplicity (Amazon), check out the videos, and .....

Try it, you'll like it!
