Aiming Hack Feedback & Pre-Round Mental Warmup

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Today's tip is a mental game tip that I saw from another mental game coach, David MacKenzie.

Aiming Hack Feedback

Before I get to that, I wanted to give some feedback on my new aiming process per the research I wrote about in Issue 827 - Aiming Hack. I've played about five rounds since I wrote the article, aiming my body and clubface in conformance with an intermediary target — a spot about two feet in front of the ball in line with my distant target. After that, not looking at anything else but the intermediate target, the ball, then swinging.

The results have been remarkable. I've shot my best round of the year, my dispersion and curvature have been more consistent, and my ball striking with my irons has also felt better. I'm totally sold on it.

If you missed the article, check it out - Issue 827 - Aiming Hack. I pretty much guarantee that you'll be happy with the results.

Pre-Round Mental Warmup

Editor's note: and I'm saying this as a mental game coach: don't be afraid to pick and choose from any mental game advice. You know your strengths and weaknesses, add or subtract accordingly. It so happens that I do everything David talks about below, except the last two. I may or may not give them a shot, I consider my personal preference to be valid.

  1. Breathe and Relax

Start with deep breathing to calm nerves. Inhale deeply through your nose, expand your abdomen, and exhale slowly through your mouth. Perform a body scan from head to toe, releasing any tension you find.

  2. Cultivate Gratitude

Reflect on three non-score-related things you appreciate about the upcoming round, such as the course quality, being outdoors, or spending time with friends. This perspective helps reduce performance pressure.

  3. Imagine Success

Use Mental Imagery to boost confidence. Recall three successful moments in your past, then 3 moments from your upcoming round, focusing on the shots you will execute and managing challenges effectively.

  4. Activate Your Player Persona

Everyone has a "Player Persona" with traits they want to embody, like being calm and focused. Use rituals—such as putting on your gear or listening to specific music to activate it.

  5. Use Music to Set the Mood

Music can set the tone for your mental state. Create playlists to calm or energize you, depending on your needs. Connect these tracks with your pre-round visualizations to enhance their effect.
A pre-round mental warm-up is crucial for setting the tone of your game. By preparing mentally, you position yourself for a more focused, confident, and enjoyable experience on the course. Remember, you need to win the game before the game.

Try it, you might like it.
