The Mental Game - Importance? First Things First
For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.
Simple concept today, take it to heart when you start your off season practice plan.
I study all things golf constantly. It's obviously a passion of mine, and I'm always trying to get better as a player, teacher, and coach.
As such, I took some training available through my professional organization, and became an IGPA Certified Golf Psychology Coach several years back. Lately, I've been seeing a ton of marketing for online mental game courses and coaching.
As a Certified Golf Psychology Coach, my candid take on the overall importance of the mental game may surprise you.
If you are a golf instructor or coach, by all means educate yourself on the mental game processes.
If you are just an avid golfer, don't spend too much time on it.
Instead, your priority should be spending more time developing the skills necessary to play better.
Players that are playing up to their potential don't seem to think that they need much information on the mental side of the game. Players that are struggling with their games, at some point often seem to gravitate to "I need to work on the mental side of my game" - a quick fix solution. Quick fix solutions are rare in golf, and this scenario doesn't qualify.
This may stem from the old saying that "golf is 50% between the ears". I don't dispute that, but that 50% is more of repeated neural pathways associated with technique, than just thinking positively about the game.
There are three basic components for playing good golf that every serious player should work on all the time, regardless of their level of play.
- Low Point Awareness

Associated skills:
- ball first - ground second strikes for irons and hybrids
- striking your driver on the ascending part of your swing circle.

Associated Skills:
- Clubface control
- Swingpath control
- Understanding what makes the ball curve

Associated Skills:
- Swingspeed development
- Physical strength development
Pick the weakest of the three basic skills associated with your game, and get better at it over the winter.
Try it, you'll like it.
