Two Quick Simulator Practice Tips

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Many of us are gearing up for some pre-season practice when 2025 rolls around.

That means some simulator work for those of us living in the Northeast.

Here are a couple of tips for your simulator practice so that you'll be ready for the 2025 golf season.
  1. Ball Striking - Ball First, Ground Second Strikes (Irons)

The essence of good iron play is controlling the low point of your swing so that ground contact occurs AFTER contact is made with the ball. When you practice on a simulator, you can develop a false sense of security because fat (ground first) strikes often go unnoticed. The best way to monitor good strikes is to place a golf towel three to five inches behind the ball, and make sure that you aren't hitting the towel on your downswing.

Start with slow, short swings, and gradually increase the speed and length of your swing as you gain confidence.

I like to practice with a "weight forward" (weight on my forward side) setup at address, and then gradually increase the weight on my forward side through impact. That pretty much ensures a "ball first strike".

  2. Consistent Curvature

In addition to good low point control, consistent curvature is also necessary for good play.

The ball curves in response to the face being open or closed to the swingpath at impact.

Outdoors, the visual curvature of the ball flight tells you where to begin to make corrections to unwanted ball curvature (slice), or where to begin to intentionally engineer curvature. The challenge is that it's trial and error as far as determining how much you need to open or close the face to get the results you want.

Indoors, if you have access to a good simulator ie: "Game of Throws" that provides swing path and face angle numbers, you can see precise data.

I'll cut right to the chase and give you some general parameters to practice for curvature:

    • Draw

Shoot for a 4 degree inside to outside path coupled with a face that's 2 degrees closed to the path for a gentle draw. Face more closed, more draw. Face less closed, less draw.

    • Fade

Shoot for a 4 degree outside to inside path coupled with a face that's 2 degrees open to the path for a gentle fade. Face more open, more fade. Face less open, less fade.

    • Straight

Match the face angle exactly with the path for a ball with no side to side curvature. Zero degrees open or closed to the path.

    • You can tweak everything (swing path, face angles) to see different results, and I recommend doing that just to see what happens.

Make your practice count, don't just bang balls with no purpose.

    Try it, you'll like it.
