Tips For Cold Weather Golf

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Tips for Cold Weather Golf

I'm going to play for as long as I can this year, and here are a few things to keep in mind if you are too.

Use a "layering" strategy for clothing, which includes a warm base, a mid-layer, and an outer shell, while also keeping your hands and head warm with hats, gloves, and hand warmers. For on-course performance, adjust your club selection by hitting one or two clubs stronger, club up to a higher loft on your driver, and consider a softer compression golf ball. Always warm up thoroughly before playing and stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the round.

Clothing and Gear
  • Dress in layers: This is the most crucial tip for staying warm without restricting your swing. Start with a base layer, then add a mid-layer like a fleece or vest, and finish with a windproof and waterproof outer jacket. Wear thermal or long underwear under your pants for extra warmth. I just bought a heated vest from Solana Gear, it hasn't arrived yet but I'm looking forward to using it.

  • Protect your feet with waterproof shoes and warm, wool socks.

  • Wear a hat to prevent heat loss from your head.

  • Use mittens over gloves between shots or keep hand warmers in your pockets or gloves. I just bought some OCOOPA Magnetic hand warmers (Amazon), they work very well - $20 - Great for Bills games too.
Keep Your Gear Warm
  • Store a ball in your pocket to keep it warm, as cold balls don't fly as far.

  • Keep your golf bag dry with a waterproof cover.
On-course Adjustments
  • Club selection: Expect reduced distance and carry due to cold, dense air. Club up by one or two clubs on approach shots to ensure you reach the green.

  • Consider adjusting your driver to a higher loft, like 11* or 12*.

  • Ball and tee choice: Switch to a softer compression golf ball, which can perform better in the cold. For example, I use a Titleist Pro-V1 ball in warmer weather and a Titleist AVX in colder weather.

Use rubber or "birdie" tees to make it easier to get the tee into the frozen ground.
Playing The Course
  • Adjust your expectations and don't worry about your score, as winter conditions are more challenging. (Disregard you're playing for a few bucks 😄)

  • Walk the course to generate body heat and improve circulation, or use a cart with a cover to block the wind.

Consider playing from a forward tee box for shorter yardage.  My regular weekend foursome plays from 6.550 yards from June 1st to October 1st. Before and after those dates we play from 6,050 yards.
Preparation and Hydration
  • Warm up properly: Spend extra time stretching and warming up to loosen your muscles and prepare for your round.

  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water even though you may not feel like it, not just hot beverages - to stay hydrated and prevent stiffness.

  • Use "winter rules": Decide on "winter rules" before your round, such as preferred lies, to improve play in potentially wet or frozen conditions

Try it, you'll really like it!
