![]() This is the most useful ball striking development training aid that I own. Swing Arc Depth Control For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective. Last week I had a call from a student that wanted my thoughts on how he could correct his thin ball strikes. Thin is when your strike appears at the bottom of the grooves instead of a couple to three grooves higher with an iron strike. I told him about a lesson I gave earlier this year with another student that was having the same problem. The solution was twofold:
During the lesson, I had the student make several swings with an 8 iron, and most of them were indeed thin strikes. I saw that his divots were not where they were supposed to be - in front of the ball, and taking a bit of turf. In fact, there were hardly any divots at all. I asked him to take some swings without a ball, and in doing so to dig a little deeper into the ground. I scratched a line on the ground for the target for the initial contact. He asked me how to do that, and I just told him to try and he'd figure it out, and he did. He took about ten swings with very healthy divots, then I asked him to take ten swings with the club just brushing the ground, which he did. I know this is starting to sound like a three bears story 😄, but then I asked him to take ten swings with light to medium depth divots which he did. Intentional Focus Now we had to work that swing arc depth into the strike. Next I had him hit 15 shots with his 8 iron, but before his backswing, I had him fixate his gaze on a spot 2 inches in front of the ball (intentional focus), then shift his gaze back to the ball, then swing. I also told him to concentrate on the feel of the medium depth divots at the strike. Out of the next 15 strikes, I would say that 9 were just about perfect, 4 were acceptable, and 2 were bad - meaning thin strikes. Very successful overall. He wanted to know what changed in his swing, but I explained that he just needed to understand what to do, think, and feel to fix the strike pattern, and then get better at implementing it with precision. Mental and physical reps. Simple intents can change patterns. Most golfers seem to gravitate to complex solutions to simple problems. Many of these golfers have really good control over instinctive, simple solutions, they just choose to never use them (or they even actively sabotage them). Trust your instincts, and don't overthink simple solutions. Just keep working at them. Try it, you'll really like it!
