Putting Stroke Trigger

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Towards the end of last year, it felt like my putting stroke was getting a bit stiff.

As I watched a few golf tournaments on TV, I noticed that several pros were using a simple putting stroke trigger that I wasn't using.

In putting, you don't seem to see too many triggers to start the putting stroke - with the exception of a few obvious ones like some players using a big forward hand press to start their stroke.

I've tried that in the past, but it tended to throw my line off when I pressed my hands forward.

However, there was one trigger that was recurring with many of the putts that I saw. I tried it, and it worked wonders to smooth out my stroke and make it feel more fluid.

When you're setting up to putt most of us have the putter head on the ground, and that's fine. But at some point your putter head needs to leave the ground so you can make a putting stroke.

And that is where you can use this subtle trigger to start your putting stroke.

It's a simple trigger that I've been using with my driver for years with great success, but never thought to use it for my putter.

Here it is.

When you're ready to start your putting stroke, you LIFT the putter head up off the ground very slightly so that the ground is not supporting the putter head in any way.

After that, simply start your putting stroke.

The trigger is to lift the putter head up off the ground prior to starting your putting stroke.

There are several benefits from that simple action.
  1. It allows you to get your putting stroke off to a much smoother start because the putter head is not resting on the ground.

  2. It's a simple trigger you can do every putt to signify the start of your putting stroke, and that puts your mind in a confident space.

  3. By having the putter in your grip without the support of the ground, your focus will be much less on the outcome and more on the process.

  4. It's very easy to practice.
Now is a good time to start practicing this at home to get used to it. Just execute 20 strokes a day, five times per week for four weeks and you'll own it. Sounds like a lot, but there's very little time involved, you don't even need a ball - just execute the strokes including the trigger.

Only by doing things you've never done before will you get different results, so JUST DO IT.

Try it, you'll like it!
