Short Putts - Cringe No More!

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

The aiming concept of "Without giving the hole away" is what motivated me to write this article.

For years, when I lined my putt up to "not give the hole away" on any putt - but especially short putts, I was frequently missing with my ball either rolling over the edge of the hole or power lipping out.

Then I had a eureka moment: instead of determining my aimpoint by looking inside the edge of the hole, I switched to aiming the ball just right or left of the center of the cup.

The difference in my results were monumental. Very few over the edge or lip out misses, more putts pouring into the center of the hole.

I now recommend this aiming method to all of my students for short putts.

If you cringe over puts in the 5' and closer range, cringe no more - here's how to roll them in with confidence.

Here are the important elements for all putts:
    • Speed - rolling the ball at a speed that will carry 10" past the hole if you miss.
    • Aiming Point - your aimline at setup.
    • Strike - striking the center of the ball with the center of the clubface.
    • Stroke - shoulder powered pendulum stroke, with a perfectly still head until the ball is well off the clubface.
Here's what changes for short putts in the 5' and closer range:
    • Speed - rolling the ball at a speed that will carry 18" past the hole if you miss.
    • Aiming Point - your aimline for short putts with a strong roll should negate most of the break for minimally breaking putts. Firm strike, and set up without giving the hole away. If there is more than minimal break, aim for less break because your stroke will be firmer than normal for this distance.
    • Strike - striking the center of the ball with the center of the clubface.
    • Stroke - shoulder powered pendulum stroke, with a perfectly still head until you hear the ball drop into the hole.
Adjustments for sidehill and downhill putts:
    • Less speed - so misses don't run away from the hole, I recommend a speed that just gets the ball to the cup.
    • Play more break - slower rolling putts break more than faster rolling putts.
Important details for marking your ball

I've mentioned this type of ball marking in previous newsletter articles, but it's worth mentioning again because of my personal experience with it. I don't want to jinx myself, but I can't remember the last time I missed a short putt with my ball marked this way.

The stencil is called the Eyeline Golf Impact Ball Liner by Hank Haney - 3 Pack. You can find it at Amazon, Dick's Sporting Goods, and probably at other golf stores as well.

Here's a video I found on how to use it:
How To Mark Your Ball For Perfect Putting Alignment

Of course you do need to determine the break, but that notwithstanding - I really don't know why everyone doesn't mark their ball this way.

    Try It, You'll Like It!
