Too many recreational golfers hit the ground, then the ball; low handicappers hit the ball, then the ground. High-speed photography of Tour players shows the golf ball turns into a pancake at impact. You can feel the same sensation by placing a ball on the floor and squeezing it with your foot. As you move your foot to the side, the ball will eventually take off, which is similar to the compression that a club face makes. Hit some chip shots with a 9-iron. Then turn the loft into a 7-iron at impact. This should cause the top of the shaft to be closer to the target at impact than the bottom of the shaft and give you the feel of compressing the ball. You now are on your way to the correct impact position for iron shots, keep practicing!. Enjoy, Tom
