Tom's Featured Tip:
Open Shoulders

For the sake of simplicity, all advice on swings and drills is provided from a right handed perspective; lefties .... well, you know what to do!

The first thing that I usually look at when I am giving a lesson to a good player who is having problems is ball position. The second thing I look at is body alignment, especially the shoulders.

Many players have a tendency to set up with their shoulders open to their squarely aligned hips, knees, and feet.

I think that the cause is often looking at the target as the setup is being taken, and leaving the shoulders slightly open because it's easier to see the target that way. A "open shoulders" setup is very destructive to solid ball striking and produces inconsistent directional results, and usually a fade or slice occurs as well.

When the setup alignment is corrected, a longer swing, better turn, better lag, better direction, and better curvature results.

Check your setup often and identify the feeling of being set up with your shoulder aligment square to your hips, knees, and feet. It will probably feel like a closed stance if you have been a "serial" shoulder opener.

Ways to check your alignment include
  • having someone stand in front of you on the target side checking your alignment;

  • video;

  • and holding a long dowel or a long pole across your shoulders at address to see where they are aimed. In my lessons I often use an extension pole to make the point.
Square it up to hit it solid and straight.

Love your practice, enjoy your golf, own your swing,

Tom

Tom's Bonus Tip:
Timing The Release in The Downswing

For the sake of simplicity, all advice on swings and drills is provided from a right handed perspective; lefties .... well, you know what to do!

I received quite a few questions about when the wrist uncocks in the downswing, and when the lag should be released in the downswing.

It's such an important topic that I decided to put the topic on my drills page. Click here for an explanation and an animated image of how the release should occur through impact:
