Tom's Featured Tip:
Chip Shot Substitute

For the sake of simplicity, all advice on swings and drills is provided from a right handed perspective; lefties .... well, you know what to do!

I've labeled this tip "chip shot substitute", but if you are a player that never practices your chipping, it should probably be your "go-to" chip shot. In fact, even though I get in plenty of chipping practice, I'm going to try to remember to use this technique more often just to see what the results show.

With this method, you should be able to score better - even if your golf swing doesn't improve.

We see this shot almost every week on the Tour - a player uses their fairway wood or lofted hybrid to chip with around the green. I guess if it's good enough for them, it's good enough for the common golfer.

A reason that top level players use this method is that it is easier than chipping off of poor lies. Most of the time, the outcome of these bad shots is better than the outcome of bad shots when chipping. And this holds even more true for non tour players that are not putting the time in on their chipping game.

The way I teach this shot is to use a hybrid or fairway wood with 17 - 25 degrees of loft, then:
  • choke down a little on the grip
  • weight distribution is 60% forward leg, 40% rear leg, with no weight shift during the backswing
  • very slight forward press
  • ball position should be rear of the ball in the center of your stance, but sometimes a bad lie dictates that the ball be a little more towards the rear foot
  • execute a swing that's equivalent to a long lag putt stroke
This is so easy to understand that even if you are a poor chipper, you should be able to read thus tip a couple times, then go play and use it right away. You will definitely get the ball closer overall than if you were to have chipped instead.

I'd rather see all of my students and readers practice their chipping enough to become great chippers, but if that's just not in the cards for you - try this, you'll like it.

Love your practice, enjoy your golf, own your swing,

Tom

Tom's Bonus Tip:
Strong Grip, Weak Grip

For the sake of simplicity, all advice on swings and drills is provided from a right handed perspective; lefties .... well, you know what to do!

The words strong grip or weak grip are often misunderstood by novice golfers.

When these words are used by golf instructors, it refers to the position of your hands, not the grip pressure that is applied. If you don't understand that, advice like "strengthening the grip on your lead hand will help correct a slice" could make the problem worse. The reader must understand that it's grip position advice, not grip pressure advice.
  • Left Hand Grip Positions
    • an extremely weak left hand grip would be one that is rotated to the left so far that the palm faces upward.
    • an extremely strong left hand grip would be one that is rotated so far to the right that the palm faces downward.

  • Right Hand Grip Positions
    • an extremely weak right hand grip would be one that is rotated to the left so far that the palm faces downward.
    • an extremely strong right hand grip would be one that is rotated so far to the right that the palm faces upward.
My recommendation for default grip positions for each hand is a grip that has both hands in a slightly strong position. In other words, both hands would be rotated to the right just past center. This is a good starting point for everyone.

Love your practice, enjoy your golf, own your swing,

Tom
