Tom's Featured Tip: Target Hyperfocus

For the sake of simplicity, all advice on swings and drills is provided from a right handed perspective; lefties .... well, you know what to do!

I love it when my outdoor lessons are in full swing, because I get great ideas for this newsletter based on what my students are doing - or more correctly stated, what they are not doing.

Last week I conducted quite a few lessons, but I wanted to discuss an interesting thing that happened at three chipping lessons. One lesson was with a male who has played golf all his life, two were with females, one of which was a raw beginner, one was very experienced.

None of them ever had a chipping lesson before, which is a shame. I say that it's a shame, because I believe that becoming an excellent chipper isn't given it's due in this game we love.

Just think about it. Isn't it obvious that if you learn to chip well that your putting percentage has to improve? I explain to all of my students that they will be better at putting and chipping immediately after those lessons, and that has held true. Here's a very recent example of immediate improvement: testimonial.

If you learn the correct mechanics of how to execute a putting stroke and a chipping stroke, and then if you practice some feel drills, you will get better. Period.

Here's the important thing I noticed with these students - hyperfocusing on the target produced great results.

For each of these students, we were just about at the end of the lesson and I had the students practicing chips to different distances to prepare for a little challenge that have at the end of the lesson.

They were all chipping pretty well, but each of them improved dramatically when I told then to really stare the target down during their pre stroke routine. I really emphasized burning a hole in their target before they glanced at the ball for the final time before they struck their chip. The results were amazing. Each of them started chipping like they had been doing it correctly all their life. Quite a few chips actually were holed out.

Here's what I said to each of them as they stood poised next to the ball in their pre stroke routine:
  • Stare at The Target
  • Stare at The Target
  • Glance at The Ball
  • Stare at The Target
  • Stare at The Target
  • Glance at The Ball
  • Swing (or Stroke) & Hold
Try hyperfocusing on the target during your chipping and putting practice, then take it to the course. I'll pretty much guarantee improvement if you do!

Love your practice, enjoy your golf, own your swing,

Tom

Tom's Bonus Tip: Putting - Belief

For the sake of simplicity, all advice on swings and drills is provided from a right handed perspective; lefties .... well, you know what to do!

Excellence at the short game - greenside chipping and putting in particular - starts between the ears.

I mandate that all my students refer to themselves as "excellent putters" because if you don't think it, it won't happen.

Starting today, consider yourself to be an excellent putter, then start working to make that description become a reality.

Love your practice, enjoy your golf, own your swing,

Tom
