Tom's Featured Tip: Q&A: Lie Angle

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Q: Hi Tom, last year, towards the end of the season, a friend of mine told me that he thought I needed to have the lie angle of my clubs checked because I was hooking the ball a lot. Exactly what does lie angle have to do with that?

Thanks, Bill R., Buffalo, NY.

A: Thanks for the question Bill. Hooking is caused by a clubface that is closed to the swing path direction at the point of impact, and a directional miss is often caused by an incorrect lie angle.

Here's the scoop on lie angle.

Let me start out with a couple of definitions.
  • The "lie angle" is defined as the angle made between the shaft and clubhead. A proper lie angle helps to ensure that the sole of the club will be parallel with the ground at impact.

  • To make a club have a "flatter" lie, the hosel would be bent to make the toe of the club move downward, away from the shaft.

  • To make a club have a "more upright" lie, the hosel would be bent to make the toe of the club move upward, towards the shaft.
Lie angle adjustments are normally spoken of in relation to irons or putters only.

If a player is playing with irons that have a lie angle that is too upright, that players common directional miss will be to the left, and may or may not be coupled with hooking curvature.

If a player is playing with irons that have a lie angle that is too flat, that players common directional miss will be to the right, and may or may not be coupled with slicing curvature.

Getting fitted for clubs nips the problem in the bud if it's a thorough fitting.

How to test your irons for correct lie angle.

The best way would be to test yourself with every iron in your bag, but a quick test can be done with an iron with a "neutral" lie angle, such as a six or seven iron.

The way it's been done for ages is with a lie angle strike board, but I've got an easier way for you.

The lie angle strike board method involves hitting balls off a lie angle strike board, which is essentially a black strip of hard plastic. The black plastic leaves a mark on the sole of the club, which will indicate a correct lie angle - mark in the center of the sole, too flat - mark near the toe of the club, or too upright - mark near the heel of the club.

This is a time proven method and is great - if you have a lie angle strike board and can hit at a downward enough angle to produce a mark on the sole of the club. Not everyone can do that naturally, and as soon as you ask yourself to make an unnatural swing, you've defeated the purpose of the test.

Here's the dry erase marker method, which is easier and more practical in my book. Don't do this indoors when you are hitting into a simulator screen because it may leave a mark. You could do it at a dome type indoor range, or outdoors.
  • Get a broad tip dry erase marker - black or blue work best for me.

  • Draw a straight line on the ball, then position the ball so that the line is centered and pointing straight up and down on the rear of the ball when you place it on the ground.

  • Then, just start hitting your irons.
The mark on the ball will leave a straight line on the face of your irons if you hit it square.

If the line angles towards the toe of your club, your lie angle is too upright and it may need to be bent flatter a degree or two.

If the line angles towards the heel of your club, your lie angle is too flat and it may need to be bent more upright a degree or two.

Here'a one more personal experience tip on lie angle: when you set up with your irons, the toe of the club should sit up very slightly, because the centrifugal force of your swing will actually cause the shaft to flex and the clubhead to flatten out a little.

If you do need a lie angle adjustment to your irons, it will make a world of difference when you get it done. Test yourself and see what you come up with, it may surprise you.

Health, Wellness, Fitness: Resistance Band Squat & Press

Disclaimer: DO NOT PERFORM ANY STRENUOUS PHYSICAL EXERCISE LIKE THE ONE LISTED BELOW, WITHOUT CONSULTING YOUR DOCTOR.

Whenever I go on vacation or on a trip, I usually bring several resistance bands along to maintain the continuity of my workout schedule. Most hotel "fitness centers" don't have an adequate strength training equipment, and bands can fill the void.

I prefer the flat ones vs. the round ones, but any good quality bands will do.

One very simple and excellent full body exercise that pays exceptional benefits is the squat and press.

To perform it, simply step on the band with both feet and hold the top end across the front of your shoulders. Then perform a full squat that progresses to a full military overhead press. That's one rep.

If you don't lift now, try this exercise three times per week and you'll reap strength and range of motion benefits.

Here is the sets and reps scheme I would recommend:
  • Monday - one set of one more number of reps than you did Friday. (Start out with six reps at a resistance that feels challenging)

  • Wednesday - three sets of ten reps, medium resistance (lighter than Monday or Friday) 90 seconds rest between sets.

  • Friday - one set of the same number of reps you did Monday,up to ten reps, heavy resistance; add bands if necessary. When you can get ten reps, add resistance for the next Monday workout and drop the reps to six.

Enjoy!

Isotonix Daily Essentials Kit Customer Reviews

Note that they are called Daily Essentials - not Daily Optionals - for a reason! Simply said - if our body doesn't make it, we need to take it. These all-natural supplements have made a profound difference in my health. I used to take high blood pressure and cholesterol medication, and I now have normal blood pressure and normal cholesterol levels and take none of those medications anymore.

In fact, all of my blood work is perfect.

The only change I made to get off these medications was taking my Daily Essentials, and that's not even why I started taking them, it was a side benefit. I started taking it to increase my energy, and it did that too!

Tom's Bonus Tip: Trust Your Feet

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

When you are trying to determine the break for a putt, "stalk the hole" and you'll feel the break in your feet.

"Stalk the hole" means start at your ball, then walk up to and around the hole and back to your ball, taking care to not step in anyone else's line.

You'll get a great feel for the break and slope of the green between your ball and the hole.

Since I started doing this several years ago, I've gotten used to trusting my feet more than my eyes for reading putts and it's paid benefits.

Try it, you'll like it, especially if you wear glasses!
