Tom's Featured Tip: Slow Motion Practice

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

If anyone were to ask me what was the best thing they could do for their swing in a short period of time, my answer would be slow motion movement pattern practice.

I read a book a few years ago entitled: "Slow Practice Will Get You There Faster: Link between Ben Hogans' mirror practice and his slow motion drill" by Ernest Dras, and I believe the concept has a ton of merit.

If you added 15 minutes to your practice regimen and used all of that time for concentrated slow motion movement pattern practice - no ball, just you and your club - you'd get better at that motion. The caveat is that the motion needs to be done perfectly. If you have the knowledge and the patience, you will build skill for that motion.

First acquire the knowledge - take a lesson, read a book, watch a good DVD - then schedule the practice time.

After you have a concept of how you want to swing the club, break the full swing pattern down into small chunks, then practice each chunk separately. After you've nailed down one chunk, move on to the next, then eventually piece them all together.

To get the absolute most out of this type of practice, use a mirror or video yourself to make sure that you are doing each move 100% correctly. I like the mirror because it gives me immediate feedback while I'm doing the motion.

Here's what your chunks might look like:
  • takeaway to half way back
  • half way back to top of swing
  • initial downswing movement
  • half way down
  • IMPACT
  • one third into follow through
  • two thirds into follow through
  • full follow through
When you perform the chunks, pay close attention to detail.

This doesn't replace full speed practice, but it adds to it's quality when you do slow movement practice before your full speed practice.

It will be challenging to not speed things up, but stay the course, keep it slow, and watch your skill grow.

Tom's Bonus Tip: The Buffalo Pro Net Golf Tour

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Chris Carroll, one of my students who is playing in as many mini tour events (and cashing) as he can manage in his quest to make it to the tour, mentioned something of interest to me.

He has a friend - Sean Michalski - who has started a mini tour locally called The Buffalo Pro Net Golf Tour. Details are here: buffalogolftour.net

It's interesting because it has a scratch division and a handicap division.

If you are interested in competing against your peers or in the scratch division, it offers that choice. The really nice thing is that they are being held at local courses that you will recognize.

I wish Sean well, but I'm stopping short of an endorsement because my experience is that tours like this are challenging to sustain. I know firsthand, because about 18 years ago I was playing in these types of tours for awhile and they came and went.

Having said that, there's not much risk for participants, so check it out to see if you might want to give it a shot.
