Tom's Featured Tip: Shoulder Turn

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

An often overlooked power generator for the golf swing is the shoulder turn.

When you turn your shoulders correctly in the backswing, you can add a good ten yards to your driver carry, so here are a few do's and don'ts for the turn.
  • Don'ts
    • Don't turn your shoulders on a plane that is flatter than your swing plane. Your shoulder turn angle should be at about 90 degrees to your spine.

Most people don't realize that they are turning too flat, so here's a way to pick up a little more turning flexibility and to monitor your angle. Simply make long turns back and through your swing with a long pole held behind your neck and your hands at shoulder width. More specifically, anchor the pole along the upper part of your trapezius muscles just below the base of the back of your neck.

Turn back and make sure that your left shoulder goes down, the long pole should give you an idea of the angle of your turn. Then turn through and make sure that your right shoulder also goes downward.

I use an extendable light bulb changing pole that I picked up at Home Depot for this drill, but any long pole will do.

    • Don't forget to turn your shoulders to start your backswing motion and let everything follow in sequence.

  • Do's
    • When you try to turn your shoulders in your backswing, you will gain more turn if you think about getting your back shoulder behind your head rather than thinking about turning your front shoulder back. Our shoulders are fairly flexible moving forward, and this flexion can be mistaken for a turning motion when our torso isn't actually turning.

Think "right shoulder behind the head" and your shoulders and torso will rotate as they should

Work on your shoulder turn and don't be surprised if you find more distance in your drives.

    Tom's Bonus Tip: Putting Mantra

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

A putting mantra is something that you say to yourself as you stroke a putt.

The purpose of a mantra is to provide rhythm, affect stroke path, or both.

If you use the following mantra when you stroke your putt, I will all but guarantee that you will putt better, here it is:

    "STRAIGHT BACK - STRAIGHT THROUGH"

timing the words to coincide with those parts of your stroke.

I can hear many readers saying "Tom, I don't putt with a straight back - straight through stroke, I have an arcing stroke!"

I don't care about that, let it be what it is and use the mantra and I'll guarantee that you will make more putts regardless.

Try it on the practice green and watch your accuracy and distance control improve.

And remember, you heard it here first.
