Tom's Featured Tip: Warmup Like Jordan Spieth

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

I saw a video clip the other day showing Jordan Spieth's actual warmup routine prior to a tournament. He starts his warmup routine 1 hour and 15 minutes before his tee time, and here's exactly what he does:
  1. 15 minutes on the putting green
    • (12) - medium length putts, using one alignment stick to monitor his stroke path
    • (12) - 4 ft. putts, balls placed in a circle around the hole
    • (12) - 7 ft. putts, balls placed in a circle around the hole

  2. 35 minutes on the range, using one alignment stick for the entire range session
    • (17) - 60 degree wedges
    • (7) - 56 degree wedges
    • (8) - pitching wedges
    • (7) - 8 irons, caddie records swing with iPhone from DTL (down the line) view and Jordan checks it out
    • (8) - 6 irons
    • (3) - 4 irons
    • (5) - hybrids
    • (6) - 3 woods
    • (4) - drivers

  3. 10 minutes at the chipping area
    • (9) - chip shots
    • (8) - bunker blasts

  4. Then the last 15 minutes, back to the putting green
    • (21) - various length putts, no training aids, then he walks to first tee
If you are playing in tournaments or important events, I would recommend following his lead. For myself, it looks like a pretty good template for a general practice session, with the exception that I may re-distribute the swings to allow for a little more work with any club or swing that I've been having trouble with.

Tom's Bonus Tip: Lifting Up

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

One of the most common swing faults I see is lifting up on putts or full swings. Many times I've heard players that I play with say they hit a bad shot because they "lifted their head", when in reality they lifted their whole upper torso.

Lifting your upper body or your head during the swing or stroke changes your posture, which changes your weight distribution and the point of contact with the ball. It compromises your alignment and swing plane in the middle of your swing. This in turn changes your swing path and your clubhead orientation to the ball.

For full swings, this error often leads to lifting and pushing the handle of the club away from your body, opening the clubface, and causing either a blocked shot or a slice or fade.

For putts, the most often miss associated with lifting up is a putt that ends up short and right of the target, although every now and then it can result in a pull if your hands try to over correct the error at impact.

The cure is staying "down and through" on all swings until the clubhead is well past impact.
