Tom's Featured Tip: Haste Makes Waste

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Have you ever stroked a putt on what you thought was the correct line, then it broke the wrong way?

I know that I have, and on a couple of occasions I then looked at the line from behind the hole in the direction of where the ball was and saw the correct line. (I just had a Eureka moment - maybe that's where the phrase "hindsight is always 20 - 20" came from.)

My haste caused me to shorten my pre-shot routine by not getting the "hole to ball" view, just the "ball to hole" view, and it caused a stroke to be wasted. For me it happens every now and then when I'm rushing, usually for no good reason. That's something I can work on in 2016 for sure.

Whenever you have a putt where you are not 100% sure of the direction of the break do two things:
  1. "stalk the putt" by walking to and around the hole, letting your feet feel the direction of the slope
  2. then get behind the hole and look towards your ball to reinforce what your feet told you.
Don't let haste cause (stroke) waste.

One more thought on this subject.

When the break looks different from the "ball to hole" view than it does from "hole to ball" view, and your feet didn't tell you a lot about the slope when you stalked the putt, play it straight.

This has paid big dividends for me, because I always tend to see some break in a putt, even the straight ones. This has straightened out my brain on quite a few occasions, and I've made putts that I would have missed if I didn't trust the process.

Tom's Bonus Tip: Knowledge is Power

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Here are a few Rules nuances and changes you may have missed, enjoy.

Q: A player is not permitted to lift their ball from a bunker to identify it. True or False?

A: False. Rule 12-2. This Rule was changed in January 2012 and at the same time, Rule 15-3 was changed to remove the exemption from penalty for playing a wrong ball in a hazard.

Q: Can a player rake a bunker when his ball is in it?

A: Since January 2012, players are permitted to smooth sand or soil in a hazard at any time, including before playing from that hazard, providing it is done for the sole purpose of caring for the course and nothing is done to improve the position or lie of their ball, the area of their intended stance or swing, or their line of play. Rule 13-4.

Q: If there is "reasonable evidence" that a ball that has not been found is in an abnormal ground condition, the player may take relief under Rule 25-1c. True or False?

A: False. In January 2008, the term "reasonable evidence" was replaced by the stronger requirement of "known or virtually certain".

Q: Following a wayward drive, a player may not play a provisional ball once they have left the immediate area of the teeing ground and started walking towards the place where their original ball is likely to be.

A: Not so! A player may now return to play a provisional ball if they have not proceeded more than approximately 50 yards towards where their original ball is likely to be. Decision 27-2a/1.5 (revised January 2014).

Q: In stroke play, a player makes a stroke at their ball in a bunker; it hits the lip of the bunker and rebounds, hitting their shoe. They incur a penalty of two strokes.

A: Nope. The penalty was decreased from two strokes to one stroke in January 2008. Rule 19-2.

Q:Which of the following questions may a player ask a fellow competitor without incurring a penalty?
a) What is the distance between my ball and the hole?
b) What is the distance of this par 3 according to your rangefinder?
c) How far do you think that water hazard is from this teeing ground?
d) All of the previous questions?

A: d) All of the previous questions. In January 2008, the definition of "advice" was amended to allow the exchange of information on distance, which is not now considered as advice.
