Tom's Featured Tip: Short But Sweet(spot) Tip

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

There's a lot of talk in the golf world about aspects of technique like foot pressure and kinematic sequence in the golf swing to hit longer shots. BUT....

... all of that is pointless if you can't hit the middle of the clubface consistently.
And it's been proven over and over again that your handicap is largely determined by how consistently you hit the middle of the clubface.

Here's something you can do to get feedback on your face strikes with your driver.

Get some Dr Scholls foot spray and spray it on your driver clubface, or use some impact tape. Even better - if you have the time, putt a dry erase marker dot the size of a dime on the back of the ball if you want real precision on the face location of the ball strike.

Then hit balls.

BUT before you look at where the impact location is after you hit your shot, try to guess where you hit the ball on the clubface.

Why would you do that over just looking right away?

Because awareness can be corrective.

If you know by feel that you're hitting it consistently on the toe then you can fix that. If you can't feel that, then it will be very difficult to hit the ball more consistently in the middle.

Initially when you're working on trying to hit the middle of the clubface more consistently, don't even try to hit the center of the clubface more consistently.

Instead, try what I've been doing lately with good success with my students that are inconsistent face strikers with their driver.

Before you swing your driver, imagine where you're going to hit it on the face - but not in the middle. Try to hit it on the toe and see if you can do that. Once you have achieved that then try to hit the next shot on the heel. When you can do those two things then get more precise and try to hit it high on the toe, low on the heel, low on the toe, high on the heel etc.

Once you can do that reasonably well (5 times out of 7), try to hit the middle of the clubface.

Hitting the middle of the clubface is all about control. Varying the face strike location should give you a feel for control, which in turn should give you a feel for hitting it in the middle of the face.

There's lots of things you can do that are the opposite of what you think you should do to hit the middle of the clubface more often.

It's eye opening to see what happens when you remove technique from your mind and simply TRY for a certain result. You'll be amazed.

Don't be afraid to experiment. After all is said and done, golf is a game of discovery. That means discovering what works for you - and it's very possible that it's not the same thing that works for everyone else!

TRY it, you'll like it!
