Tom's Featured Tip: Two Simple Drills To Become A Great Putter

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

There is absolutely no reason that anyone reading this can't improve at putting if you are willing to put in a little practice time..

Here are two drills that will help you to become a really great putter - providing that you commit to doing the drills for two to five minutes, four times per week.

The objective is to develop a putting stroke that is travelling straight back and straight through at impact with a perfectly still head. I place a premium on these two particular putting fundamentals.

Here are the drills.
  1. Stroke Path Drill done without a ball.

    • Set up two 18" 2"x4"s to form a channel just wide enough to fit your putter into.

    • Set up for a putt with the head of your putter in the channel, and execute continuous straight back and straight through strokes, keeping your head perfectly still. Make the stroke length about ten inches back and ten inches through.

Keep swinging your putter back and through the channel continuously for two minutes.

Even if your stock stroke has some arc to it, you will ingrain a square at impact position with your putter into your brain.

Do this drill two times per week, two minutes per session. Do it more frequently if you wish, but absolutely commit to two sessions per week.

  2. Still Head Drill done with a ball and a dime.

    • Set up two 18" 2"x4"s to form a channel just wide enough to fit your putter into.
    • Put a ball in the channel and rest it on top of a dime.
    • Stroke the putt and do not move your head until you see the dime after the putter head has passed over it.

Do this drill two times per week, five minutes per session. Two times per week will be enough for this head still technique to take hold.

Note: if the dime moves when you stroke the putt, you are not striking the ball as you should - slightly on the ascending portion of your putter swing arc. Make a ball position adjustment until you are picking the ball cleanly off the dime. That's a bonus benefit to the drill.
Do these drills now and over the winter, and you'll be amazed at how much your putting will improve.

If you commit, you will get better. Do you have what it takes to get it done?
