Cheerios - Shank You Very Much

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Yesterday I gave a lesson to a 5 handicap player who was suffering from the shanks.

I have total empathy for anyone with that problem because I had the shanks so bad 20 years ago that I almost quit the game.

After talking with the student for few minutes, my plan of action for working the problem out was:
  • to explain the rules of ball flight to the student so that he knows what causes what
  • to video swings from the caddy and down the line view to observe his swing tendencies
  • to discuss what I think is causing the problem
  • then to apply the cure
This particular student had over the top tendencies in his downswing, which can contribute greatly to a shank, and he also had a tiny sway in his backswing.

I gave him some swing keys to correct those issues, then we went to work to fix the shanks with some intentional focus exercises with two of my favorite training aids:
  1. a Divot Board
  2. and a handful of Cheerios (Fruit Loops work well too)
I set him up on a Divot Board with a Cheerio poitioned about 1/2" inside the ball, towards his feet.

Then I had him make several swings with the intention of hitting the cheerio with the heel of his clubhead. I varied the position of the cheerio for subsequent swings, and his clubface control was very good.

Next, I had him hit golf balls off the ground with a cheerio set up in the same manner.

Twelve goood strikes, no shanks.

Next, the moment of truth.

I had him hit another fifteen balls, imagining that the cheerio was still there. I did have to correct him a few times when the heel of his cubface wandered too close to the ball at address.

Fifteen very solid strikes, no shanks.

He was happy, I was happy, so shank you very much Cheerios.

Do this if you've got the shanks, you'll love the results.
