This is the most useful ball striking development training aid that I own.
Grip - Quick Tips
For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.
Following the spring routine that Jack Nicklaus had with his teacher, Jack Grout, it's the time of year for me to review some fundamentals. As Jack did, the first is my grip.
Here are 6 grip tips to review before your season gets started in earnest (here in the Northeast).
- Use a training grip for practice: Grab an old club with a training grip to ensure your hands are consistently in the correct position.
- Test grip pressure: Experiment with different grip pressures to find that sweet spot – enough control without creating tension.
- Avoid too much palm contact: Hold the club more in your fingers for better control and wrist release.
- Check your hand alignment: Make sure those "V" shapes formed by your thumbs and index fingers point toward your trail shoulder for a neutral grip.
- Use grip pressure points: Apply a bit more pressure on the last three fingers of your lead hand and the middle two fingers of your trail hand.
- Check for wear on your glove: Your glove can tell you a lot. Examine it for wear patterns, especially on the palm, to ensure proper hand placement.
