Hit More Greens In Regulation

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Before I get into this week's topic, wasn't that one of the greatest Masters ever?

My favorite players - in order - are Tiger, Bryson, and now Rory.

I wasn't a Rory fan until I recently read that he donated his entire winnings from a tournament to home for Downs Syndrome children. That flipped the switch for me. More power to him, it was a great win!

=================================================

How Many Greens Should You Be Hitting Each Round?

Here's how many greens you should be hitting - by handicap - and some thoughts on hitting more greens in regulation.
  • H-0, GIR - 10.6 (11)
  • H-5, GIR - 7.4 (7)
  • H-10, GIR - 5.8 (6)
  • H-15, GIR - 3.8 (4)
  • H-20, GIR - 2.5 (3)
  • H-25, GIR - 1.6 (2)
How To Hit More Greens.

Higher Handicaps - 15 and higher

Higher handicaps hit between one and four greens per round. The biggest issue these players face are long approach shots to the greens. It’s most often a distance problem.
  • Prioritize gaining distance off the tee: Average approach shots in this handicap group can reach over 200 yards, which makes hitting greens in regulation (GIR) difficult. Gain 10-15 yards off the tee, and you’ll give yourself more of a chance at hitting the green.

  • Take an extra club: Higher-handicap players miss short of the green more than 60% of the time, think about clubbing up and ensuring your yardages are accurate.

  • Stop aiming at pins and go for the center of the green regardless of where the pin is.

  • Play the right tees for your current playing ability: try moving up a tee box until your distance improves, you'll like the game more for sure.
Lower Handicaps

Generating distance is not as much of an issue here as are distance control and overall accuracy of the approach shot.
  • Nail down your distance control with wedges: You must take advantage of all GIR opportunities with a wedge or short iron. Work on half and three-quarter wedge shots where you can manage trajectory, spin, and distance.

  • Track and monitor your misses: learn your miss tendencies - short, long, left, right, etc. Work on clubface and swingpath control.

  • Simulate course play at the range: change clubs after each swing, change targets, and rehearse shot shapes and pressure situations.
Work diligently on these improvements and you'll be hitting more greens in regulation faster than you think.

Try it, you'll like it!
