PROFOUND: Caffeine and Golf!

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Today's newsletter contains some profound information on how caffeine can really HELP your game.

HOWEVER, before you decide to try adding caffeine to your game day plan, DO NOT DO IT if your body can't handle caffeine. Don't play Russian Roulette wuth your health.

Here's the study, and what I plan on doing to take advantage of this new information.

In a peer-reviewed study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, Petey W. Mumford and colleagues tested the effects of caffeine on golf performance and fatigue.

Here’s what the researchers found, and how it might change your approach before teeing off.

The Study Setup

This was a double-blind, placebo-controlled study.
  • Participants: Single digit male golfers
  • Format: Simulated tournament (36 holes, walking, stroke play, $1000 prize pool to help ensure a competitive event)
  • Intervention: Caffeine group vs placebo group
  • Dose: 1.9 mg of caffeine per kilogram of body weight, taken twice (once before the round, once at the turn)
This put total intake at approximately 3.8 mg/kg, split into two smaller doses for more stable energy throughout the round. (3.8 mg/kg is about two or three eight ounce cups of coffee for the typical person)

Researchers measured:
  • Score
  • Driving distance
  • Greens in regulation
  • Perceived fatigue and energy levels
What They Found
  1. Performance improved.
Golfers who took caffeine had significantly better scores, longer drives, and hit more greens in regulation compared to the placebo group.

  2. No downside to accuracy/control.

  3. Caffeine reduced fatigue.
Players in the caffeine reported lower levels of physical and mental fatigue and higher feelings of energy during the round.
What This Means for Your Game
  • Caffeine may help you play better, not just feel better.

  • Try it during practice rounds first.
Caffeine affects people differently. Use a similar dose (1.5 to 2 mg/kg) before a non-competitive round and evaluate your tempo, focus, and feel.

  • Consider splitting your dose.
The study gave half before the round and half at the turn. That steady approach may help reduce crashes or late-round jitters.

  • It’s not just about distance.
The mental edge matters. Caffeine may help with focus, alertness, and sustained performance deep into the round.
How I'm Going To Work This Into My Game
  1. Calculate my weight (200 lbs) in kg - I googled it, 97 kg.

  2. Calculate my recommended total caffeine intake - 3.8 mg per kg of body weight. 3.8 (97) = 369 mg of caffeine, split into two smaller doses for more stable energy throughout the round.

  3. Determine the form of caffeine I'm going to take, and in what form.

I googled the rate of absorption for caffeine in various forms. Here's what I found:

Studies have found that the effects of a cup of coffee, a glass of cola, energy shots, and energy drinks are noticeable after just 10 minutes, but the peak caffeine concentration in the blood occurs after 45 minutes.

Caffeine capsules typically start working about 15 minutes after ingestion, with peak effects usually experienced within 45-60 minutes. However, individual responses can vary due to factors like metabolism and dosage.

Caffeine pills typically start working within about 45 minutes to an hour after ingestion. The effects of caffeine can last for several hours, with the peak effects usually felt within 30 to 60 minutes.
Implementation

Old plan:
  • I have been taking a 5 Hour Energy Shot (200 mg caffeine) before I play for energy,
  • then a 30g Fairlife protein shake after 9 holes to maintain my concentration.
New Plan
  • One 200 mg caffeine pill one hour before my tee time - or a 5 hour Energy Shot just before I hop onto the putting practice green for my 10 - 15 minute putting warmup routine;
  • a 5 hour Energy Shot or a Celsius Energy Drink after hole 8,
  • a 30g Fairlife protein shake after hole 9.
I think this setup will give me an extra energy boost for the back nine (caffeine), and still maintain good focus (protein). I'm pretty pumped and I can't wait to see how it works!

Try it, you'll like it!
