Driver Tips For The First Tee

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

===========================================================

FYI, I'll be starting up my outdoor lessons the week of May 12th, weather permitting.

===========================================================

We all want to hit our drive well off the first tee, but for many of us we haven't had time to hit the range. As a result, sometimes that first swing is a bit of a crapshoot.

If you haven't had time to warm up on the range before your round, here are four things that you can do about 10 minutes before you tee off to ensure that you execute a swing that produces a good drive off the first tee.
  1. Warm up the thoracic spine gently with my favorite pre-round warmup exercise - The Thoracic Spine Matrix Exercise. I do this religiously every time before I play, and I haven't had a sore back since I started doing it. I hold two clubs instead of a stick and it works unbelievably well.

  2. Warm up dynamically for two minutes, then make some fast swings.

    Here are four good warmup exercises, do them for 30 seconds each (or just do your choice of any calisthenics and do them for two continuous minutes):
    • side bends
    • upper body turns with your hands on your waist
    • raise one knee as high as possible towards your chest for 15 seconds, then the other (rapidly)
    • extend your arms from your side then rotate them in small circles - 15 seconds in each direction

  3. Next, grip your driver near the neck, not the handle, and make three extremely fast swings while maintaining your balance. This will remind your body to execute a fast swing. Do this on the tee box behind your ball. Don't be embarrassed, just do it.

    FYI, I do these fast swings on some subsequent tees also - just to remind my brain and body to swing fast.

  4. Set up to hit your teed up ball (teed up higher if you want to hit a draw, teed up lower if you want to hit a fade), positioned well forward in your stance. Now slide your hips about an inch forward, but do not move your head laterally.. This gives you radial spine axis tilt to help you launch the ball higher and longer. Your right shoulder will be set up lower than normal, giving your shoulder line an upward tilt like Tiger's in the image below.

    This helps you strike the ball on the ascending part of your swing arc to launch it long and far. Do not lean your upper torso away from the target to tilt your spine and shoulders. Instead slide your hips forward an inch, it will help you execute your normal weight shifting movement in your backswing.
Try it, you'll like it!
