Curvature and Ball Position

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

I play golf on weekends with some good players, one of whom was leaking shots to the right very frequently.
  1. I mentioned to him that if he moved the ball back in his stance a little it would straighten out his ball flight.

    He did, and it did.

  2. For about four rounds after that, after my own ball flight was leaking right too often and too much, I moved the ball back in my stance. As a result, my ball flight became straight shots or draws with excellent compression. Don't ask why I waited four rounds for that change, I have no answer. 😄

  3. On Father's Day, my son Tom who lives in Texas told me he found something in his swing. He normally hits trap draws, and was over-curving (hooking) everything. One of his playing partners observed that he was playing the ball extremely far back in his stance, almost off his rear heel. He moved it forward quite a bit and started hitting his desired two yard draws again.
Here's why these changes in ball position worked.
  1. Every player involved in these examples has a fairly consistent swing circle.

  2. The point of tangency means the point where the outward and downward swing circle hits its full extension and low point.

  3. In the instances described in numbers one and two above - my swing and my playing partners swing - we had been making contact slightly past the point of tangency, and swinging across the ball a little bit, enough to cause a fade or slice. Moving the ball back in our stance so that we reached impact before the point of tangency, gave us a strike with a more square clubface, better compression, and with a swing path that was travelling more inside out than outside in. The resulting curvature changed from fade or slice bias to a straight or draw bias.

  4. In my son's case, he was striking the ball too far back in his swing circle, causing too much of an inside out swingpath with a clubface that was closing, causing too much draw or hook curvature. Moving the ball forward in stance presented the clubface with less inside out swingpath, and slowed down the rate and amount of draw curvature.
Here's your takeaway, providing that you have a relatively consistent swing circle:
  1. If your ball flight is too much left to right, move the ball back in your stance until it falls behind the point of tangency.

  2. If your ball flight is too much right to left, move the ball forward in your stance until it falls at or slightly forward of the point of tangency.
Try it, you'll like it!
