The Inside Out Swingpath Drill

insideout swingpath

Outdoors
  • Scrach an aimline in the ground with a tee
  • Next, scratch a short line through the aimline to mark where a ball would be, we'll call this the ball line.
  • Now scratch another line diagonally through the intersection of the aimline and ball line which represents an inside out path to the ball/aimline intersection. This line would approach the aimline from below as you look at it from the address position. Below the aimline means inside, above the aimline would be outside.
  • Address the ball/aimline intersection with a 7 iron held in your left hand only, right hand in your pocket. Keep your weight over your left leg, and execute half swings. Swing through the ball/aimline intersection with an inside out swingpath following the diagonal line. In your abbreviated backswing, check to see that the toe of the club is pointing up or just short of up - not turned open. Allow the club to release so that the toe of the club points up in your post impact follow through. Hold your abbreviated follow through position briefly and check for the correct clubhead position and a straight left arm.
  • Minimum of 100 reps each time you do this drill.

Indoors

I did this indoor drill religiously one winter about 29 years ago from October through April, 100 reps per night minimum, seven nights per week , to get rid of a slice. It worked. The following summer my default ball flight was a slight draw - in fact, I had to retrain myself to hit a fade. Tom

You can do this if you have a space to swing a club or not. If you don't have that much ceiling room either cut a club short, or buy a junior iron made for a very young player. If you have a very short ceiling, just do the drill while holding a 12 inch ruler.
  • Get a carpet remnant or a chunk of inexpensive indoor ourdoor carpet about 5 ft. long and 4 ft. wide.
  • Take a stance near the bottom of the carpet remnant and trace the outline of your feet on the carpet with a magic marker.
  • Next, draw a straight line on the carpet that represents your aimline in relation to your stance, this line would be parallel to your stance line.
  • Next, draw a one inch vertical line that would represent a ball position that would be in the center of your stance. It will look like a notch on the aimline drawn on the carpet.
  • Now draw a dotted line diagonally through the intersection of the aimline and ball line which represents an inside out path to the ball/aimline intersection. This line would approach the aimline from below as you look at it from the address position. Below the aimline means inside, above the aimline would be outside.
