Tom's Featured Tip: THE Most Important Putting Tip
For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.
In the world of golf instruction, and for putting in particular, theories and instruction abound on how to grip the putter, how to stand, ball placement, swing path, tempo, pace, and the list goes on.
If I were asked "what's the most important thing in putting?" my answer would be quick.
It's the squareness of the putterface to your aimline at impact.
That other stuff is important, but if your putterface isn't square to your (correct) aimline, you're going to miss the putt. It's that simple.
The simplest drill that you can do to feel the face squaring to your aimline at impact is a drill that I call the "squareness awareness" drill. To practice this drill set up the end of a 2"x4" board laid flat on the ground, then gently strike the board with a perfectly square putterface. If it's not a square strike, the board will twist. It's a great drill for proper feedback.

If you practice this drill you'll be amazed at how much more accurate your putting will be, and a side benefit to striking the ball with a square face will be better to distance control.
