Tom's Featured Tip: Positive Distraction For Putting Success

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Today's tip is invaluable for those of you that tend to really feel the heat on those short to mid range putts that make or break your score.

Distraction is generally not a good thing for golf concentration. However, there are some high pressure situations where you can actually make distraction - positive distraction - work for you.

A Positive Distraction has been defined as "an environmental feature that elicits positive feelings and holds attention without taxing or stressing the individual, thereby blocking worrisome thoughts."

Pressure putting is a prime example of when to utilize positive distraction.

The method that has worked for me over the years when facing a pressure putt has been two pronged:
  1. I simply remind myself that I've made a million of these putts over the years, and that it's not the end of the world if I miss.

  2. Then I hum a song - either slightly audibly or internally - that takes my mind off the situation and helps me execute my stroke with good tempo and speed.
These two things calm my nerves and allow me to stroke good putts.

Number one above puts things in perspective, number two positively distracts me and removes nervousness from my stroke.

I've personally discovered (golf is a game of discovery) that music with 90 beats per minute works well for my tempo.

You can actually google "rock songs with 90 bpm", "country songs with 90 bpm" or your preferred genre with 90 bpm, and come up with some great songs.

Here are few examples. When you practice at home, play them out loud on your phone or through your ear buds.
  1. Fat Bottomed Girl - Queen
  2. We Will Rock You - Queen
  3. The House of The Rising Sun - Animals
  4. If I Were A Carpenter - Johnny Cash
Try them out. If the beat to these songs isn't right for your tempo, find a few ither songs that work for your particular tempo then use them when you practice and play.

Work positive distraction into your putting, and nervous putts will be a thing of the past. Get the line right, and it's a sure fire formula for success on the greens.

Try it, and I absolutely guarantee that you will make more pressure putts.
