Tom's Featured Tip: Q&A: What To Do During The Quarantine

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Before I get started, I hope everyone is being sensible during these trying times. However, to be honest I don't really agree with the closing of golf courses. Of course I'm biased, but I truly believe that enough protective measures could have been put in place to allow them to function - but without tournaments for the time being.

I hope that changes soon.

I had a reader send in the following question last Monday:

"Hi Tom, first of all let me say that I really enjoy your newsletters, please keep them coming. My question is what should I do during the quarantine to help my game when the restrictions are over?

Thanks, Rich R., Rochester, NY

First of all, thanks for the question and the gracious comments.

To answer your question specifically, here are the three things that I recommend to do during this forced time off.
  1. Improve your putting
  2. Improve your swing speed
  3. Improve your overall power
In this time of restriction, you can actually make some improvements in the areas I mentioned, but more importantly you can build habits which carry over to when things get back to normal.

Here are some specifics on my recommendations.

1. Improve Your Putting

I'm going to make this one extremely simple. We're going to kill three birds with one stone - touch, tempo and accuracy.

Set up two cans as shown below, about 2 1/4" apart (you may move them closer as you get better at it):

The ball should be placed 16" away from the cans, and a puttng mat or a strip of indoor-outdoor carpeting will do just fine.

Place a barrier - a couch cushion, a piece of 2"x4" etc - 8' away from the ball

Now stroke 20 putts through the opening between the cans, while saying to yourself "Swing Back - Swing Through". Your stroke should be synchronized with the words. Produce a strike that rolls the ball with just enough speed to gently stop at the barrier.

You will develop outstanding touch, tempo, and accuracy with this drill done only 5 times per week, 20 reps each time.

2. Improve Your Swing Speed

Below is a newly revised swing speed training protocol for reasonably fit players. Don't try this unless you have your doctors permission to do it (I had to say that). If you are not reasonably fit, scale the effort back on everything and progress as your body allows you to without pain or injury.

Here's what I use for my swing speed training. I bought the Coaches set, most of you will opt for the Men's, Ladies, Junior's, or Senior's set. Click through for more information. SuperSpeedGolf.com It's a $199 investment for quality that will last a lifetime.

If you don't want to spend the money, just turn your driver upside down and grip it on the shaft near the head and swing it that way.

3. Improve Your Overall Power
