Tom's Featured Tip: Tiger and Bryson

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

It was refreshing to see a 23 yr. old kid - newcomer Collin Morikawa - win the PGA Tour Championship yesterday, especially so since he's not realy a "bomber" of the golf ball.

I must admit, however, that most of my attention was on my favorite golfer - Tiger, and my 2nd favorite player Bryson DeChambeau.

Tiger putted poorly until Sunday, and one announcer mentioned that he thought it was because of his new putter.

I totally agree with that. His new putter is longer, and that allows Tiger to practice longer without back pain (a more vertical stance) - but at what cost?

Tiger is an expert at his putting method, which is an arcing backswing, then a putterface that releases (squares up) at impact to send the ball down the target line.

As much of an expert as Tiger is, the extra length of the putter makes it just a touch more difficult to get the face exactly square at impact. Add the fact that the greens were not as super fast as Majors usually are - and Tiger historically does not putt well on slow greens - and the result was a finish that was disappointing for Tiger.

Think about squaring the face of a putter that is longer than normal with this analogy: most decent average players have no problem squaring the face of the club with an 8 iron swing.

But take those same average players and watch their driver swings. A whole lot of them are leaving the face open because the club is longer, and the extra length alone makes it harder to get the face squared up at impact.

There's an exaggerated distance difference between an 8 iron and a driver, and two putters with an inch or two difference in length. There's also a exaggerated price to pay with a putterface that's slightly off of square at impact - it absolutely costs you strokes.

Tiger's an expert and he'll figure it out, but for us mere mortals, the best advice is to learn to putt with a "straight back - straight through" stroke with a mallet type putter head. In my heart I wish Tiger would go back to his shorter putter, even if it means practicing a bit less. His brain already knows his stroke, it just needs to be refreshed once in awhile.

"Straight back - straight through" is the advice that Dave Pelz gives, and he's my "go to" guy for putting theory and execution.

That's basically how Bryson DeChambeau putts, and he's had great success with it. His stroke looks a bit odd, but I expect nothing less from golf's current mad scientist.

If you're not already doing it, try a "straight back - straight through" putting stroke. I really think you'll like it.
