========================================================

I'm still getting a few emails asking "how far should I be hitting my irons?"

It's not an invalid question, but it's kind of backwards. The better question is: "What club should I be using for an xxx yard shot?"

This question is currently relevant to me personally, because I just purchased a new set of irons with different specs than my last set, so I'm not dialed in on the distances.

One of the tools that I'll use to help me set up the club distance gaps from iron to iron in my bag is a Rapsodo Moblile Launch Monitor that I just got in the mail yesterday.

I'll get into that monitor more in a future issue after I've tested it. Basically will give me all the data that I need to see how far I hit each iron - carry distance and rollout - then I'll know which club I need to hit on my approach shots.

Most of the players that I know have an idea of how far they hit their irons, but most of then haven't really nailed down their distances as well as they should.

Here's how to do that without a launch monitor at the range.
  • Go through your whole bag; 10 shots with each club. Starting with the highest-lofted club, start to pay attention to where the ball is landing (most of the time). After 10 shots, compare the result to the yardage marker closest. For example, if you hit 10 8-irons and of the 10, eight of them land at or around the 125 marker, your 120-125 club is your 8-iron.

    If you have the skill to pull it off, check the carry distance diference between a fade and a draw with the same club and same swing velocity.

  • After you have gone through the bag to start, jot down the result on a piece of paper, then transfer it to "notes" on your phone. If you have an older phone, or if you prefer a hard copy, keep the paper handy when you play and refer to it until you have your distances memorized. Make other notes besides distances, such as "I hit my four iron and my four hybrid the same distance, but the hybrid flies higher and runs out more." Notes like those will really help you with club selection when it's windy.

  • Next time you play, pay attention to how your on-course yardages compare to what you found on the range. There will be some differences because the environment has changed. Note those changes.
You have to keep notes on what is happening until you see consistency. Over a short period of time you will begin to see patterns. You will eventually know:
  • The basic stock swing yardage for all your clubs
  • How the environment affects your golf ball
  • And you'll get an understanding of what clubs you hit well vs the others
This information is invaluable, so take the time at a range to do this precisely.

If you try it, you'll definitely like it!
