Tom's Featured Tip: 48" Drivers, Hitters, Swingers

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

========================================================

Leading up to the Masters Tournament this year, a big story line was Bryson DeChambeau's experimentation with a 48" shaft on his driver. It turned out that he wasn't ready for that tweak in time for The Masters, but I'm sure we'll see a 48" driver in his bag soon.

48" is the longest shaft length allowed under the rules of golf, and as most of my readers know, I've been using that length shaft for over a year now. It has provided me with at least 12 yards more carry off the tee, and my accuracy hasn't suffered at all as long as I pay attention to a few swing keys.

More backswing length equals more centrifugal swing speed with a 48" shaft, and that equals more distance.

I wholeheartedly recommend that length driver for just about anyone that wants more distance off the tee, but there are a few caveats that apply to "hitters" or "swingers".

Hitters have the mentality of swing hard and kill it. They usually have a very strong and dynamic release (squaring up) of the clubhead at impact.

Swingers have the mentality of swing fast and smooth and strike the ball. They usually have a passive, natural release (squaring up) of the clubhead at impact.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with either mentality, although there's merit to the concept of developing negative tension in your body prior to taking the club back if you have a "hitter" mentality. There's also merit to a "hitter's" strong hand action through impact compensating for the tension.

Either swing mentality can work well with normal length clubs, but with a 48" driver, some swing tweaks are in order to make it work.

"Hitter" tips for using a 48" driver:
  • Your backswing will need to be a little longer. You can make that happen by simply lowering your left shoulder as you execute your backswing, and allowing your right knee to straighten a bit. That will give you several more inches of backswing.

  • Make sure that you complete your backswing, a short backswing will not work with a long driver.

  • Your normally strong, whipping release needs to be more of a gradual release feeling, a bit more passive. Grip the club a bit firmer with your left hand, and feel like you are not forcing your hand action through impact.
"Swinger" tips for using a 48" driver:
  • Make sure that your backswing is long and complete. You can extend your backswing by lowering your left shoulder a little more as you execute your backswing.

  • You also need to make sure that you complete your backswing, a short backswing will not work with a long driver.

  • Your normal natural release will be late with a 48" driver. You will need to consciously activate your hands and wrists more than usual to square the face at impact. You can practice this feeling by making one handed swings with a badminton racquet, and feeling the racquet face rotate as if you were hitting a forehand tennis shot. That's how the release of the driver head should feel.
One more tip - you'll probably need a shaft one step stiffer than you currently use in your driver. I found that the extra length made it a bit more flexible at full swing speed.

Try a 48" driver shaft, I really think you'll like it.
