Training Aid Purchasing Tips

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Quick note: The Divot Board has SOLD OUT... BUT you can still order one to make sure you are part of the next wave. Expected shipping date is March 8.

Last week's newsletter article on The Divot Board resulted in several inquiries about training aids that some of my readers have bought, and asking what I thought of them.

I provided my opinion on every inquiry, and it prompted me to provide a few thoughts on evaluating commercial training aids before you decide to buy.

Before I get to that, I've bought and tested a lot of training aids over the years. To be honest, a lot of them were below par, which is why many of them are currently collecting dust in my basement (much to the chagrin of my wife 😀)

I personally may spend money on a training aid that:
  • I need and maybe want to evaluate for promotion.

  • doesn't actually do the technique work for you. It should guide you towards correct technique, not put you there. Don't confuse this with "constraint training", that has a role in technique development when done appropriately.

  • provides a benefit that you can't readily get without it. If you can use a common object to accomplish the same thing, do it. For example, a comb stuck in the back of your left hand glove is a constraint device that let's you feel if your left hand wrist is breaking down in your putting stroke. I've seen other devices (gloves, braces) for sale for upwards of $100 that do nothing more than that.

  • can be used indoors and outdoors. Not mandatory, but a plus.

  • prevents wear and tear on me, on a club, or on the range. This is why I'm so keen on The Divot Board. It's not only convenient, but it will save wear and tear on the ground when I conduct my ball-striking lessons. The owner of the range where I conduct lessons will also love that. That PLUS you can use it indoors in the winter.

  • perhaps does the same job, or close to the same job that I could do with something else, but has outstanding durability.

  • has good bang for the buck.

  • I use. If I use it personally and recommend it, it's safe to buy it if you need it. This may seem like a shameless plug, but the truth of the matter is that if I promote something it's been thoroughly tested by me, and I feel that it's worth the money. Does this mean that you should buy any training aid that's being promoted by any golf professional, or any professional golfer? Sadly, no it doesn't. I just looked at a training aid today, name of the product withheld, that was being promoted by a former TV golf announcer and golf teacher, and it was a product that absolutely looked under-helpful and overpriced.
It all boils down to four main considerations for me:
  1. Need (NOT want)
  2. Durability
  3. Value
  4. Price
Try buying with these considerations in mind, and you'll probably like what you get.
