The Rypstick
For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.
This is my 651st weekly golf tips newsletter, and I don't think I've ever affiliated with two similar training aids before, but there's a first time for everything.
About a month ago a swing speed training aid called The Rypstick caught my eye. I'm not unhappy with my SuperSpeedGolf swing speed sticks, but the simplicity, cost, and versatility of the Rypstick intrigued me.
He is the Director of Instruction at Interlachen Country Club in Edina, Minnesota and the Founder of Ryp Golf. He has been a Golf Digest "Best Young Teacher" for more than a decade and is known for his creative and personable approach to coaching golf. His academic research at the University of Minnesota includes a PhD in motor control and learning. Luke coaches State Champions, professionals, college players, total beginners, and everyone in between.
We communicated about the successes we each had with swing speed training with our respective college teams. That was interesting because we both kind of flew by the seat of our pants since high quality swing speed training aids were not available 10 years ago.
Luke went on to develop the Rypstick, and for the last 3 years his team has been researching overspeed/overload training and the results are outstanding. The clubhead speed gains with 2 months of training with the Rypstick were:
- 98% of his students picked up 2 mph,
- 50% of that total picked up 5+ mph,
- and 10% picked up 10 mph.
I also think that the differences in swing speed gains can be attributed to:
- A lower swing speed ceiling for those players that already had exceptional swing speed.
- The swing speed training "intensity investment" of each individual.
- The strength training "intensity investment" of each individual.
I received my Rypstick in the mail shortly after my contact with Luke. I've been swinging it for about two weeks now, and I really like the feel (and the sound) of it.

Rypstick workouts I personally think that
their follow along
workouts are 2nd to none. They are short, simple, easy to follow, and well produced.
- Feedback The Rypstick makes a whistling sound when you swing it, the faster your swing, the louder the
sound.
I like the feedback it gives me on my effort level.
- Rypstick offers a distance chart to guide you into the correct shaft for your Rypstick
- You can take or leave this point, but loading and removing the weight cartridges feels cool. It feels like you are loading or unloading a revolver. I'd be surprised if that wasn't part of their research and development discovery for finding an easy way to give the Rypstick its versatility.
If you do not already own a high quality swing speed training aid, I wholeheartedly recommend the Rypstick for all of the reasons enumerated above. It gives you great bang for your buck.
