Early Season Mistakes and Fixes

So..... I've been playing with a buddy quite a bit on vacation here in Florida, and I've been watching him struggle with his game.

I have a rule that I don't volunteer information when I'm playing with anyone, but if they ask I usually help them out - if I can do it without slowing up play.

I broke my rule when I asked him if he would like some help with his swing, and he said "I thought you'd never ask."

It was a perfect day for this, because there was a grandfather, father, and two young sons in a foursome behind us. We were a twosome, so we had time on our hands during the round.

He was doing a few basic things wrong, so we went through them during the course of the round and he was striking the ball pretty well on the last few holes.

I'll list what we went through and fixed. They are pretty much common early season golf mistakes, and I'm pretty sure you'll find something here that will help your own game.
  1. Fault:Too much upper torso slide through impact. This was causing mis-hits and shots that flew to the right at impact, usually accompanied by a slice.
Fix: Minimal lateral head movement until after the strike. I helped him feel this by holding shaft alongside the left side of his head while he swung a club. He felt it when he moved his head laterally too soon.

  2. Fault: Quitting at the hit. He had been stopping his rotation at impact, which inhibits a good release, and causes a huge power leak.
Fix: Continue to rotate through impact, concentrate on "belly towards the hole" in your follow through.

  3. Fault: "keeping your head" down past impact. While this actually may be good advice for putts and short chips, it can kill a full swing as well as cause neck problems. It tends to inhibit a full release, and promotes truncating your follow through. It was contributing to his problem of "quitting at the hit".
Fix: At impact, allow your head to swivel so that you can maintain your rotation through impact, and so that you can see where the ball is going. Swivel your head in good posture, don't lift it up - lifting instead of swivelling causes it's own set of problems.

  4. Fault: inconsistent body alignment at address. He had been aligning left to compensate for his slice.
Fix: align parallel left of your target.

  5. Fault: swinging "up" with his irons to help them get airborne. This was causing both fat and thin hits.
Fix: the thought of "squishing" the ball into the ground when he was hitting his irons, and "sweeping" the ball with his hybrids, woods, and driver.

  6. Fault: Cautious swings. This was causing weak, off line shots.
Fix: the concept and thought of swinging freely, hitting it straight, and feeling a good release of the clubhead.
My buddy, who had shot in the upper nineties in the first two rounds we played, shot an 86 after he adopted the changes in our third round of the week. If he shoots another good round tomorrow, I'm sending him a bill for the lessons 😊

Try some of these fixes as appropriate, you'll like it!
