For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.
The Divot Board
This is the most useful ball striking development training aid that I own.

Today's tip was prompted by a putting lesson that I gave recently.
This particular student had two issues with his putting.
- Too much head movement, which was an easy cure after he realized that he was doing it, and
- Poor distance control on his long (lag) putts.
He tended to "hit" at the ball, rather than swing through the ball on his forward stroke pattern.
You can actually get away with "hitting" at the ball on short to medium putts, but as the putts get longer "hitting" at the ball will produce as many three putts as two putts (maybe more).
The Cure
We fixed his problem with a combination of pre-shot routine adjustment, and a swing mantra.
- During his pre-shot routine, I had him stand behind the ball and make three rehearsal swings while looking at
the hole.
I asked him to feel a long smooth pendulum stroke, and to allow the pull of gravity to come into play during the
transition to his forward stroke.
Next I had him stand next to - but away from - the ball, again looking at the hole and making three rehearsal swings, feeling the pull of gravity in his transition from back to forward strokes.
Then he stepped in to the ball, took one look at the hole, looked back at the ball, and executed that stroke he had been rehearsing.
- Mantra while he was making his rehearsal swings, and during his actual swing, I had him say aloud: "Swing Back - Swing Through" in cadence with his stroke.
If you have trouble with your long putts, try this - I think you'll like it.
