20 Hours

I'm on a "Learning" roll.

As I said last newsletter, I'm always on the lookout for ideas from other disciplines that can be useful for golf. Tuesday I viewed a video - link later - The first 20 hours -- how to learn anything by Josh Kaufman, that I believe can have some great applications for your golf practice.

Skill acquisition has always been of prime interest to me, so I watched it - and bought the book right after I saw his presentation.

One of the generally agreed upon learning concepts is that to master a skill, you need 10,000 hours of practice. In my opinion, that should be changed a little - to 10,000 hours of focused, "as perfect as you can get", practice.

Practice wrong, and you've mastered an incorrect way to do something.

To most people, 10,000 hours is an overwhelming amount of practice time to put in at anything, even if you do attain expert level performance as a result. To put it in perspective, 10,000 hours is the equivalent amount of time you'd put in at a full time job for 5 years!

But Kaufman's research has proven that you can learn a skill - not master, but learn - a lot quicker than that, in 20 hours of focused practice to be specific. To put that in perspective, it's about 45 minutes a day for a month, with a couple of days off thrown in.

Here are his four simple steps to rapid skill acquisition (20 hours). They were not given in a golf specific context at all, but apply them to golf and I'm 100% sure that you'll see improvement. Golf is fun, and it's even more fun (and less frustrating) as you get better at it. 20 hours seems like a small price to pay for that.
  1. Deconstruct The Skill.

Break it into small pieces and work on it in bits at a time. This applies perfectly to golf - identify your swing problems, identify drills to help you correct them, then put in the work. Solve your most glaring problems first.

  2. Learn Enough To Self Correct.

One of my goals when I give lessons is to train the student to identify what went wrong when they see a bad result from their shot, and then have a concept of what needs to be done to correct it.

Learn enough to notice when you are making a mistake, then do something different to correct it.

There's no shortage of books, DVD's, online information, and of course personal instruction, in the field of golf or golf improvement. Identify information that pertains to your swing, or how you want your swing to be, and get educated.

  3. Remove Practice Barriers

Remove distractions like your phone, or a location that has to much surrounding activity. Give yourself a chance to focus on deliberate practice.

This also means not letting bad weather be a barrier. Create an indoor setup where you can work on putting, chipping, and full swing - if you're lucky enough to have an overhead that allows for a full swing indoors. You can be creative and set up some great practice stations that don't cost a lot of money.

  4. Practice At Least 20 Hours

For golf intentions, does this mean 20 hours of "block" practice, or 20 hours of "variable" or "differential" practice? I think that depends on your starting skill level. If you are new at the game, "block" practice is absolutely necessary. After you have developed some skill, or if you are already an initiated golfer and are aiming for improvement, "variable" or "differential" practice may be the best way to go.

"Block" practice means practicing the exact same thing over and over until you've got it down.

"Variable" or "differential" practice means mixing in different swings or swing tweaks as opposed to doing the same thing over and over.

Here's a link to Josh Kaufman's 20 minute video on You Tube entitled "The first 20 hours -- how to learn anything | Josh Kaufman |"

Try this, you'll really like it.
