"Bounce" Guidelines
I had a friend ask me how much bounce he needed on his wedges, and I thought that the essence of our discussion might be useful to all of you, so enjoy.
First of all, here's how bounce angle is measured.
If the shaft of the club is in the vertical plane (normal address position) but tilted toward the golfer, the angle the shaft makes with the ground toward the golfer is the "lie angle." This is when the leading edge, and generally the score lines on the face are horizontal.
The angle the face plane makes with the vertical plane when the club is in this position is the loft angle. In this same position, the angle the sole makes with the ground (horizontal plane) is the bounce angle.
For example, let's say this bounce angle is 10 degrees. This means that the back of the sole is lower to the ground than the front at an angle of 10 degrees. A 12 degree bounce angle would have the leading edge of the club higher off the ground than a 10 degree angle.
Generally speaking, a wedge with 12 degrees of bounce should work well enough to help most players get the ball out of sand bunkers, but here are a few simple guidelines on how to use the bounce of your wedge correctly:
- If your attack angle is steep, you need more bounce.
- If your attack angle is shallow, you need less bounce.
- If your course generally has tight lies, you need less bounce.
- If your course generally has heavier lies, you need more bounce.
- If the bunker sand is fluffy, you need more bounce.
That's what good players do, and that's why a lot of low handicap players have an assortment of wedges with different bounce angles. They match their wedges with the course they are playing on any given day.
Try it, you'll like it and you'll score better.
