Putting Tip - Alignment
I've often written that the most common error that I see poor putters make is moving their head during their putting stroke.
The problems this causes are:
- Your alignment invariably changes to opening your shoulders and aligning them left of the target.
-
Your stroke becomes more of a glancing stroke, which does not impart a full 90* angle of compression into the ball.
The result will be that you will probably leave the putt short of the hole because it won't roll out as far as you intended it to.
- On a short putt, you might still get the ball to the hole, but you'll probably miss to the left, depending on whether you kept the face square to your initial aimline at impact or not . Even if your swing path is going left, the ball could still go straight towards the target if the face stays square to the intended target line - but it will tend to be short because of the weak strike.
Make sure that your shoulders, hips, knees, and feet are aligned parallel left to the aim line.
A time tested way to think about this is as if your toes were on one rail of a railroad track which is pointing along the target line and the putter on the other rail.
- Simply put two aiming sticks or golf clubs on the ground parallel to each other like railroad tracks.
- Put your golf ball just inside the far track and your feet just inside the near track.
- Practice getting your feet, knees, hips, shoulders, arms and eyes parallel to the clubs on the ground.
And last but not least: KEEP YOUR HEAD STILL UNTIL THE BALL HAS LEFT THE PUTTER FACE AFTER IMPACT
Practice this alignment and stroke method on your putting mat at home during the winter, 3 times per week, 100 strokes per session, concentrating on correct alignment and a still head and I absolutely guarantee that your putting will improve in 2022.
