Ball Position For Max Distance Wedge Shots
I received an email from a reader named "Dave from Orchard Park" last Sunday asking me "Tom, what's the best ball position for me
to hit the ball as far as I can with a wedge?".
So here's the answer, and it will take some work on your part Dave.
First of all, it's important to know the range of distances that you can hit any of your wedges, with partial swings to
full swings. And please note that when I am giving a wedge swing lesson, the wedge full swing is never more
than 90% of a normal
full swing. It's a relatively tight, compact, swing with 90% of your normal max swing effort.
Wedges are all about accuracy, not max distance. You have other clubs for that.
Having said that, here's a process for determing the best ball positon to hit your wedge as far as you can
with a wedge full swing.
- Set a default ball position in relation to your forward foot. My personal default ball position
for every club
in my bag except for the driver, is to have it about
two golf balls (3") inside my left heel. Then the position of my right foot defines the ball's relative position.
For example, with a narrow stance wedge swing, to my eye the ball looks like it's just about centered in my stance.
With that ball position, my swing bottom starts touching the ground just forward of the back of the ball - for a ball first
strike. Note that it's
absolutely essential to know where your own swing starts to bottom out in relation to ball position with your stance. That's one more
reason to take setting up with your stance very deliberately. It's worth practicing on it's own, as it tends to erode if you
aren't paying attention.
I found my low point the hard way, before I found out about the
the Divot Board I highly recommend it for this purpose alone.
- After you've determined a ball position where your swing bottom consistently falls forward of your ball placement simply test out
different ball positions and track the distance results to find out which placement allows for the most carry.
With your max wedge swing:
- Hit 24 balls with the ball positioned in your default ball position, write down the average distance for 18 shots - throw out the 3 highest and 3 lowest.
- Hit 24 balls with the ball positioned 1/2" behind your default ball position, write down the average distance for 18 shots - throw out the 3 highest and 3 lowest.
- Hit 24 balls with the ball positioned 1/2" in front of your default ball position, write down the average distance for 18 shots - throw out the 3 highest and 3 lowest.
If you want to tweak your ball position more, do so - you'll see which ball position trends towards more carry distance.
I'm sorry that I didn't have a simple one word answer for you Dave, but golf is a game is the ultimate game of discovery and
everyone's swing is a little bit different.
Try this process, you'll really like it.
