Tom's Featured Tip: 7 Keys To Draining All Of Your Short Putts

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Before I get started with this weeks tip, I want to thank all of you that congratulated me on my 500th Newsletter last week. That's a lot of newsletters - but it's truly a labor of love!

It was an exciting Masters last weekend, and Patrick Reed showed his mettle. He's really tough as nails, and showed no fear or nerves on a couple of short putts in the last few holes.

I can't imagine the pressure on those short putts to win the Masters. I remember feeling a lot of pressure when I faced some short putts when I was competing in club championships, but the Masters pressure must be absolutely unbelievable.

Here are my keys to draining all of your short putts, whether you're under pressure or not.
  1. Believe that you can. Tell yourself that you've made thousands of these short putts in your lifetime as you take three slow, deep breaths. That will calm your nerves.

  2. Go through your whole normal pre-shot routine at your normal pace - don't rush, and breathe evenly.

  3. Pick your line from behind the ball, and line up your ball with lines on your ball as described in last week's newsletter, Alignment Lines On The Ball

  4. After you have taken a few rehearsal strokes next to the ball, step in and align your putterface square to your target line.

  5. The next thing you need to do is extremely important, and it's not done by most players. When you look at the hole to gauge the distance for your stroke, look at the BACK EDGE of the hole! The extra 4.25 inches from the front of the hole to the back of the hole will absolutely make a huge difference in your make percentage, regardless of whether it's a straight putt or a breaking putt.

  6. When you stroke your putt, keep your head absolutely still.

  7. Don't look up to see the result, instead listen for the ball to drop.
If you execute these 7 keys, I'll guarantee that you will no longer fear those 3 to 5 footers, and that you'll make a higher percentage of them than you have in the past.

Try it, you'll love it.
