I received an email from a reader last week who asked two questions:

"Hi Tom, I'm 53 years old, how far should I be hitting my irons, and as long as I'm asking questions - I've been missing a lot of my short putts already this year, any tips on that?

Thanks, Rob K. Lackawanna, NY"

Thanks for the questions Rob.

How far should I be hitting my irons?

How far you hit the ball depends on several factors, here are some of them:
  • swing speed
  • vertical angle of attack
  • horizontal angle of attack
  • the squareness of your strike in relation to swing path and clubface orientation
  • the impact point on the face of your club
  • your grip
  • your equipment
I feel that the most important factor in distance is your swing speed. You still need to work on the other items, but swing speed is king as far as your distance potential goes.

Here's a chart that shows distances from club to club as it relates to driver swing speed:

The answer to the question is that there is no specific distance that you "should" be hitting any particular club at any particular age. That's one of the reasons we can carry up to 14 clubs. However, unless you have physical limitations, almost anyone at any age can gain more distance by staying reasonably fit and working on the factors mentioned above, ESPECIALLY SWING SPEED.

These two previously published newsletters contain some excellent content on how to swing fast, and swing speed training:

A little swing speed work will go a long way. Get the right tools to help you train and get started now.

Short Putts

There are really no excuses for missing short putts, again - a little practice goes a long way.

Here are my 5 rules for making the vast majority of your short putts:
  1. Pick your aimline with care.
  2. Play a minimal amount of break, almost always play the ball inside the hole.
  3. Make sure that your clubface is square to your aimline.
  4. Look at a spot on the back of the hole, look back at the ball, then put a firm, confident stroke on the ball.
  5. Hear the ball fall into the hole, don't see it fall.
Keep these 5 rules in mind when you practice your short putts and there's no way you won't improve

Try it, you'll like it.
