Tom's Featured Tip: "How Far Should I Be Hitting My Driver"

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

========================================================

I recently had a phone conversation with a student about overall distance off the tee, and he asked me "how far should I be hitting my driver?"

This question often comes up at my lessons, and my answer is that you should be hitting your driver as far as your body allows you to, keeping good technique and good balance in mind.

Then I teach them some ways to improve their driver swing.

As I was doing my normal study and research on the golf swing, I saw this interesting graphic on how far male amateur golfers hit their drivers, correlated with their handicap:

Obtaining maximum distance off the tee depends on several factors, here are a few:
  • Swing speed
  • A square strike
    • Practice hitting the ball in the center of your driver face by practicing hitting it inside center near the hosel, outside center near the toe, and dead center. This will give you a gauge for a center face strike.

  • The correct launch angle for the strike
    • Consciously TRY to hit it high. Tee the ball high, and catch the ball on the ascending part of your swing circle to launch it high. Usually at about 12 to 14 degrees. You really don't need a simulator, you'll see and feel a longer carry distance when you start hitting it high and straight - or even better, a high draw. You can adjust your ball position to launch it higher or lower

  • Equipment
      I switched from a Titleist ProV1 ball to the Titleist AVX and picked up 7 yards of carry and more run out. Then I re-fitted my Ping driver with a stock 48" stiff shaft and picked up another 10 yards or so. It is true that equipment can and does make a difference for some aspects of the game. If your swing isn't nailed down, the 48" shaft might not be a good idea, but the ball will make a difference.
If you are feeling that your driving distance needs improvement, try out some of these ideas. I'm sure you'll like them.
