Hitting 7, 6, and 5 Irons The Same Distance

I'm on vacation on Marco Island in Florida and yesterday my buddy and I got put into a foursome with a man and wife who were enjoying the day, but not so much the golf.

He saw my U.S.G.T.F. tag on my bag and said that he was hitting his 7,6, and 5 irons the same distance, and what should he do?

I told him he should take two weeks off then quit the game.

Of course I didn't really say that. We actually had a good discussion about the problem over the duration of the round and it prompted me to use this as a topic for today's newsletter, enjoy!

Hitting irons that are gapped correctly the same distance could be due to:
  • Equipment problems - incorrect shaft flex or torque; incorrect loft. These problems occur, but they are generally few and far between.

  • Lack of confidence in your longer irons. This is very common. Players are generally more confident in their shorter irons and swing freely with them. When they get a longer iron in their hands, they get less confident and tend to swing slower, apply less unloading, and start aiming their shots.

  • Lack of proper weight shift.

  • Lack of tempo for your longer iron swing, also very common.

  • Head movement (laterally) through impact.

  • Ball position.
This person really had no real consistency in ball placement for his mid to long irons. He had been playing it back too far in his stance for every iron, essentially in the same spot every time.

You may think that he would hit further because his club was de-lofted more from a ball played back than from a ball played forward, but combine that ball position with a lack of confidence in the swing, and you get a low screamer that doesn't carry very far.

First we settled on a different ball position for each iron - which was back of ball in the center of his stance for his 7 iron, and a ball position more forward of that for his 6 and 5 irons.

Then I told him to keep his head from sliding forward prior to impact.

When those two pieces were put in place, he started hitting relatively good shots - and the shots were carrying different distances for the different clubs.

I can't overstate the importance of nailing down the best ball positions for your irons and driver, and repeating them when you play.

Notice that I said your best ball positions. Golf is a game of discovery, and everyone's swing is unique, so experiment a little to find the optimum default ball positions for your irons with your own swing.

I think I should have sent him a bill for the on course lesson.

Try it, you'll like it!
