The Divot Board - The Best Ball-Striking Training Aid Ever? It Gets My Vote
For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.
As promised, here's the information on a training aid that may well be the most useful training aid that I've ever tested - The Divot Board. As a matter of fact, I'll be using it for every Ball Striking lesson from now on, as well as for my own ball-striking technique practice at home when I can't get outdoors.
Here's why I love it, FANTASTIC BALL-STRIKING FEEDBACK!.
Unlike most other golf instructors, I place such a premium on ball striking that my Ball Striking Lesson is a mandatory first lesson for the vast majority of my students. Because
- if you can strike the ground appropriately
- with swing speed,
- with the correct direction
- and with the correct clubface orientation,
- you can play good golf.
Most amateurs see their divots starting at various distances before the strike. If the ground strike is slightly before you hit the ball, you might get away with it - but you won't get optimal distance or spin on your shot. If it's before you hit the ball and not relatively close to the ball, or at a steep angle of attack, the result will be terrible, the dreaded FAT STRIKE.
This inexpensive Divot Board training aid will help train you to produce a proper ball-first strike, the most important first element of a good shot.
I executed about 300 swings on my Divot Board during my testing, divided fairly equally between 7 iron, 8 iron, PW and GW clubs. The board was none the worse for wear after those 300 divot producing swings.
This is a good divot pattern::
This is better, it indicates a flatter swing plane and probably better ball to clubface contact:
Any divot pattern starting inside the yellow ball is fine, middle to back of the ball is optimal.
Keep in mind that the starting point of your divot is not the low point of your swing radius. That point will occur further down the divot path.
In the course of my testing, I called the owner, Bo Longo, and asked him if you could actually use a ball instead of just using the yellow ball circle on the pad. He said that you could, but that the compression might cause a little more wear on the surface as a result.

"The Divot Board has a replaceable top pad. Designed to be able to pull off the old pad and peel and stick a new pad. The durability of the Divot Board pad depends on how hard and how fat it is hit. For adults we see a range of between 1000 and 3000 hits before needing a replacement. Though, we have kids that have been hitting on the Divot Board for over a year with more than 6,000 hits. You will see wear on the pad, but it is working if you can still read the divot. It is time to replace the pad when the plastic discs start to come off. Replacement pads are $29.99"
